IPTV buffering? 15 ways to stop it for good

Find out what really causes the spinning wheel and fix it in the right order, starting with the quick wins and working through to the settings most people never touch.

IPTV buffering is the most common complaint about streaming TV, and also one of the most fixable. A stream pauses when your device runs out of video it has already downloaded, which happens when data arrives more slowly or less steadily than the picture needs. In most UK homes the cause sits somewhere between the router and the TV, so you can usually solve it yourself in under half an hour.

Is this the right guide? This page is about streams that start but then pause, stutter or drop quality, in any IPTV app. If IPTV Smarters Pro itself crashes, freezes or will not open, use our IPTV Smarters Pro fixes. If you see a login or playlist message such as “Invalid username or password”, the Xtream and M3U error decoder explains each one.

What causes IPTV buffering

Live TV is less forgiving than on-demand video. A film can download well ahead of what you are watching, but a live channel can only buffer a few seconds behind the broadcast. Anything that interrupts the flow, even briefly, can show up as a pause. The usual culprits are:

  • Wi-Fi problems: distance, thick walls, interference on 2.4 GHz or a device that keeps roaming between access points.
  • Not enough speed at the TV: especially when choosing 4K on a line that only just manages Full HD.
  • A busy household network: downloads, backups and other streams competing for bandwidth.
  • An overloaded device: older Firesticks and budget TVs with a full cache or little free memory.
  • Account limits: streaming on more screens than your plan allows interrupts playback.
  • Network congestion: peak-time slowdowns on your broadband provider’s network.

Find the cause first

Two minutes of observation saves a lot of guesswork. Match what you see to the likely cause:

Fixes 1 to 10: the core checklist

Work through these in order. Each step either fixes the problem or rules out a cause, and the first few take only minutes.

  1. Restart everything in order. Turn off the TV or streaming stick, restart the router and wait two minutes, then switch the device back on and open the app.
  2. Check the speed at the TV. Run a speed test on the watching device and compare it with 10 Mbps for HD, 20 Mbps for Full HD or 30 Mbps for 4K per screen.
  3. Move to Ethernet or 5 GHz. Plug the device in with a cable, or connect it to the 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz.
  4. Reduce the quality. Switch from a 4K or UHD channel to the FHD or HD version, particularly at busy evening times.
  5. Free up the line. Pause game downloads, cloud backups and other streams while you watch.
  6. Check your screen limit. Make sure the account is not playing on more devices than your plan allows.
  7. Clear the app cache. On Firestick and Android go to Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, IPTV Smarters Pro, then Clear cache.
  8. Change player and stream format. In the app settings, switch between the built-in and alternative player and between MPEGTS and HLS.
  9. Update the app and device. Install pending updates to the app and the device’s system software.
  10. Test a different channel and device. If one channel buffers on every device, report it to support with the channel name and time.

For step 2, the figures and testing method are explained in our guide to IPTV internet speed in the UK. For step 8, the exact menu names are in the IPTV Smarters Pro settings section.

Tip: change one thing at a time and watch for a while before trying the next. If you change five settings at once, you will not know which one helped.

Fixes 11 to 15: going further

If the checklist has not solved it, the problem is usually in your home network or the device. These take a little longer but often make the biggest difference.

11. Improve Wi-Fi coverage at the TV

If the TV is two rooms away from the router, a mesh Wi-Fi system with one unit near the TV, or a pair of powerline adapters, will usually beat any setting change. Powerline adapters carry data over your mains wiring and work best plugged straight into a wall socket, not an extension lead.

12. Change the Wi-Fi channel

On 2.4 GHz, only channels 1, 6 and 11 do not overlap. Use a Wi-Fi analyser app on your phone to see which is quietest and set it in your router. On 5 GHz there is more room, but avoid the same channel as a strong neighbouring network. Our router and Wi-Fi settings guide has the full walkthrough.

13. Turn on QoS or device priority

Many routers, including several supplied by UK broadband providers and most mesh systems, let you prioritise a device. Giving the TV or streaming stick priority stops a large download from starving the stream.

14. Try a different DNS

DNS translates server names into addresses. A slow or unreliable DNS can delay channels from starting or cause errors when switching. Setting a well-known public DNS on the router or device can help with slow channel changes, though it will not raise your actual speed.

15. Free up the device

On a Firestick or Android box, uninstall apps you no longer use, close background apps and keep at least 1 GB of storage free. A device that is struggling for memory will stutter regardless of your broadband. If it is several years old and still struggles with Full HD, a newer stick is a worthwhile upgrade.

Device-specific tips

Fire TV Stick

  • Clear the app cache regularly if storage is low.
  • Consider Amazon’s Ethernet adapter for the main TV.
  • Turn off data monitoring and auto-play of trailers in Fire TV settings to free resources.

Smart TVs

  • Use the TV’s Ethernet port where possible; many TVs have weaker Wi-Fi than a stick.
  • Switch off the TV’s instant-on or quick-start mode now and then so it fully restarts.
  • Keep the TV firmware updated.

Android boxes

  • Stick to the Ethernet port, which most boxes have.
  • Avoid running several streaming apps in the background.

Phones and tablets

  • Check you are on Wi-Fi and not a weak mobile signal.
  • Low power mode can throttle performance; turn it off while watching.

When to contact support

If you have worked through the checklist on a connection that meets the speed figures and the buffering continues, get in touch. It helps us to know your device, the app, how the device is connected, your speed test result at the TV and the names of the channels affected, with the time it happened. If the app shows an error message rather than buffering, check the Xtream and M3U error guide first.

You can read more about how we keep the stream stable on the IPTV service page. If your household regularly watches on two screens at once, a two-screen plan on our IPTV subscription page avoids playback stopping when a second person starts watching.

Buffering FAQ

Why does my IPTV keep buffering?

Most IPTV buffering comes from inside the home: weak or congested Wi-Fi, too little speed at the TV, an overloaded streaming device, or too many streams on the same account. Less often the cause is evening congestion on your broadband provider’s network or a single channel having a problem.

Why does IPTV buffer only in the evening?

Between about 8pm and 11pm, both your home network and your broadband provider’s network are at their busiest. If your line has little headroom, that is when it shows. Use Ethernet or 5 GHz, drop from 4K to Full HD at peak times and pause big downloads.

Does clearing the cache stop IPTV buffering?

It can help on Firesticks and Android boxes with little free storage. A full cache slows the app and the device. Clearing the cache does not delete your login, though you may need to wait for the TV guide to reload.

Will a VPN fix IPTV buffering?

Usually not. A VPN adds an extra hop and encryption, which can lower speed. In rare cases where a broadband provider throttles certain traffic, a VPN with a nearby server may help, but test with and without it before deciding.

Is buffering a problem with my IPTV subscription?

Sometimes, but rarely the first thing to check. If every channel buffers on every device, test your connection first. If one channel buffers while others play smoothly, or the problem started suddenly on a good connection, contact support with the channel name and time.

What is the best stream format to reduce buffering in IPTV Smarters Pro?

There is no single best option. Most devices work well with MPEGTS (.ts), while some Smart TVs and Apple devices are smoother with HLS (.m3u8). Try one for a full evening, then the other, and keep whichever buffers less.
