Xtream Codes vs M3U playlist: which login should you use?
When an IPTV subscription is activated you normally receive two ways to log in: Xtream Codes details and an M3U playlist link. The Xtream Codes vs M3U playlist question decides how fast your channels load, whether the TV guide works and how much fiddling you do later. Here is how they differ and which to pick.
What Xtream Codes and M3U actually are
Both are simply ways for a player app to reach the same IPTV service. Neither one changes what you can watch or the picture quality. What changes is how the app asks for the content and how much it receives in one go.
Xtream Codes API is a login made of three parts: a username, a password and a server URL
(for example http://server-address:8080). The app uses them to talk to the provider’s server
and request each section separately: live categories, the film library, series with their seasons and
episodes, the programme guide and catch-up archives. The name comes from the panel software that made the
format popular; today it is a standard that almost every IPTV player understands.
An M3U playlist is a single text file, delivered as one long link. Inside, every channel or
video is a line with a name, a logo, a group and a stream address. A typical link looks something like
http://server-address:8080/get.php?username=...&password=...&type=m3u_plus&output=ts.
The player downloads the whole file, reads it top to bottom and builds its lists from it.
In one line: Xtream Codes is a conversation with the server; M3U is a snapshot of it.
Xtream Codes vs M3U playlist side by side
In IPTV Smarters Pro these are the two options on the first screen: Login with Xtream Codes API and Load Your Playlist or File/URL. Here is how they compare in day-to-day use:
| Xtream Codes API | M3U playlist | |
|---|---|---|
| What you enter | Username, password, server URL | One link (or a downloaded file) |
| Live TV, films, series | Separate sections with posters and descriptions | Often one long list split only by group |
| TV guide (EPG) | Loaded automatically | Depends on the playlist and player; may need a separate EPG link |
| Catch-up | Shown on supported channels | Often missing or unreliable |
| Updates | New channels and titles appear on refresh | Need to reload the whole playlist |
| Loading speed | Fast, loads section by section | Slower with large playlists, especially on older TVs |
| Works in | IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate and most dedicated IPTV players | Almost anything, including VLC and Smart TV playlist apps |
The verdict for most UK viewers is straightforward: use Xtream Codes whenever your app offers it, and keep the M3U link as a backup. That is the same advice we give in our complete IPTV Smarters Pro guide, and it applies equally to TiviMate and most other modern players.
EPG and catch-up with each login
The biggest practical difference shows up in the TV guide. With an Xtream Codes login the app asks the server for the programme data that matches each channel, so the "now" and "next" titles appear without any extra work. Channels that keep an archive show a catch-up icon, and you can replay programmes from up to 7 days back on supported channels.
With an M3U playlist, the guide relies on each channel line carrying an ID that matches an entry in a separate
EPG file (usually called an XMLTV link). If the playlist was generated with the m3u_plus type it
normally includes those IDs; a basic m3u version may not. Even when the IDs are there, many players
still need you to paste the EPG link into their settings manually. Catch-up is even less predictable, because
it depends on the player recognising archive tags inside the playlist.
If your guide is empty or an hour out after the clocks change, the fix is usually in the app rather than the login. Our article on the best IPTV Smarters Pro settings covers EPG refresh and time-shift in detail.
When an M3U playlist is the better choice
M3U is the fallback, but there are a few situations where it is the right tool:
- Your app only accepts playlists. Some Smart TV players and general media players, such as VLC, have no Xtream Codes option at all.
- A quick test on a computer. Pasting the M3U link into VLC’s Open Network Stream is a fast way to check whether a stream plays outside your usual app.
- You want to trim the list. Some playlist editors let you remove groups you never watch, which can make a slow device more responsive.
- A player has a temporary problem with its Xtream Codes import. Loading the M3U version can confirm whether the issue is the app or the login.
Remember that the M3U link and the Xtream Codes details point to the same account. Using both at once counts as two connections, so on a one-screen plan the second stream will cut off the first.
How to add each login in IPTV Smarters Pro
Install the app first; if you have not done that yet, the Firestick installation guide and the Android guide cover the download step by step. Then:
Xtream Codes (recommended)
- Open the login screen. On first launch, or via the user list, select Login with Xtream Codes API.
- Name the user. Type any name you like, such as "Living room".
- Enter your details. Type the username, password and server URL exactly as sent, including
http://and the port. - Add the user. Select Add User and wait while live TV, films, series and the EPG download.
- Test it. Play one live channel and one film before you sit down to watch something important.
M3U playlist
- Choose the playlist option. Select Load Your Playlist or File/URL.
- Select M3U URL. Give the playlist a name and choose the URL option rather than a file.
- Paste the full link. Make sure nothing has been cut off at the end; long links often break when copied from an email.
- Add the user and wait for the playlist to load. Large playlists can take a minute or two.
Getting "Invalid username or password" or a network error? Work through our 12 fixes for IPTV Smarters Pro not working; most login problems come down to a capital letter, a stray space or a missing port.
Keeping your login details safe
Whichever login you use, it gives access to your IPTV subscription and its screens. An M3U link is the riskier of the two, because the username and password sit in plain view inside the address. A few habits help:
- Never post a screenshot of your login or playlist link in a forum or group chat.
- Only enter your details in apps from official app stores or the developer’s own website.
- If playback keeps stopping because "too many connections" are open and you have not shared the details, contact support so the login can be checked.
- Keep the activation email or WhatsApp message somewhere you can find it, so you can re-type details rather than copying them from an old device.
Finally, the login type has nothing to do with what is legal to watch. IPTV Smarters Pro and other players are legal software; viewers are responsible for making sure what they watch complies with UK law and the terms of the relevant rights holders.
Xtream Codes vs M3U FAQ
Is Xtream Codes better than M3U?
For most people, yes. An Xtream Codes login loads live TV, films, series, the TV guide and catch-up as separate sections and keeps them up to date. An M3U playlist is a single file that is better suited to simple players or devices that only accept playlists.
Can I use Xtream Codes and M3U at the same time?
You can add both to IPTV Smarters Pro as separate users, but they are two ways into the same IPTV subscription. They share the same screen limit, so playing from both at once on a one-screen plan will stop one of the streams.
Why does my M3U playlist have no TV guide?
Some M3U links carry the channel IDs needed for EPG matching and some do not. Many players also need a separate EPG (XMLTV) link. Switching to the Xtream Codes login is usually the quickest fix because the guide is loaded automatically.
What does the server URL look like in an Xtream Codes login?
It is normally an address followed by a port, such as http://server-address:8080. Type it exactly as sent, including http:// and the port number, without a trailing slash or spaces.
Is an M3U link safe to share?
No. An M3U link usually contains your username and password inside the address, so anyone with the link can use your IPTV subscription and take up your screens. Treat it like a password.
Which login works in VLC?
VLC accepts M3U playlists, not Xtream Codes logins. Paste the M3U link into Open Network Stream. It is fine for a quick test on a computer, but it has no proper TV guide or catch-up.
